5 Ways to Prepare Your Home for Spring

Thursday, March 16, 2017

After a long, cold winter, the start of spring is finally upon us and ready to melt away the snow for a brighter, more elegant looking home and yard. The good news is, the fresh sunshine will bring a bit of vibrancy to your home. As a homeowner, it is your job to prepare the entire household for the new season in a lively manner.

Basic Cleaning

The most obvious step to prepare a home for spring is through basic cleaning tasks. Whether you’d care to admit it or not, scrubbing counters and mopping flowers is an effective method to ensure everything sparkles. Homeowners are encouraged to keep up with wood flooring care, washing walls, cleaning carpets, and polishing brass furniture pieces.

Know Your Local Pests

This is often a forgotten task until it is too late, but knowing your local springtime pests can be beneficial. Pests, including wildlife, insects, and stray dogs or cats, can wreak absolute havoc on your landscape. Plan ahead if you require wire mesh or natural plantings to deter local pests.

Plan for Growth

When selecting landscaping and plant sizes, try to estimate exactly how large each plant will grow to be in a few weeks or a few months. If you accidently plant small trees in place of bushes, you’ll have to dig up the whole lot soon.

Reseal Windows

The ice caused by cold weather of winter has been known to cause window sealant to crack or completely fall off. Before spring showers begin, it is in your best interest to reseal the windows using high-quality polymers, such as caulk or adhesive sealant tape.

Seal Chimney Vents

Chances are you won’t be using your chimney during the spring. It is a good idea to seal off the overhead vent to prevent air conditioning from escaping and local pests from entering. You’ll save money on your electricity, too!
